ASIA ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE 2016: JAPAN
Teshima
豊島
A small island on the Seto Inland Sea, Teshima is a quiet farming island locally known for growing lemons, strawberries, and olive trees.
Teshima was the site of illegal waste dumping dating back to the 1970's. The toxic waste polluted the environment, and also caused illness among Teshima's residents. It was not until the 1990's that the dumping was exposed and dealt with. During our time in Teshima, we visited the waste treatment plant constructed to deal with the toxic waste dumped on the island, and also visited with local activists who fought to protect their island against the dumping throughout the years.
